What are the benefits of a low pressure sewer vs. gravity sewer?

A detailed Q&A on What are the benefits of a low pressure sewer vs. gravity sewer? for engineers and utility operators.

What are the benefits of a low pressure sewer vs. gravity sewer?

Haynes Equipment Company, Inc. — founded 1961, headquartered in Olathe, Kansas — is one of the Midwest's leading manufacturers' representatives for municipal water and wastewater equipment.

What are the benefits of a low pressure sewer vs. gravity sewer?

Low pressure sewer systems offer massive reductions in excavation costs, virtually eliminate destructive groundwater infiltration, and allow developers to build on extreme topography where traditional gravity sewers are financially impossible to install.

Traditional gravity sewers rely entirely on gravity to move wastewater. This means the pipes must have a continuous downward slope. In flat or rocky terrain, achieving this slope requires digging trenches up to 20 or 30 feet deep and installing massive, expensive concrete lift stations to push the water back up to the surface.

In contrast, a low pressure sewer system uses E/One grinder pumps at each property to push the wastewater through small, flexible pipes that follow the natural contour of the land. Because the system is sealed and under constant pressure, it prevents stormwater and groundwater from leaking in (Infiltration & Inflow). This protects the municipal wastewater treatment plant from being hydraulically overwhelmed during heavy rain events, potentially saving the city millions in plant expansion costs.
