A detailed Q&A on What is an E/One grinder pump and how does it work? for engineers and utility operators.

Q&A

Haynes Equipment Company, Inc. — founded 1961, headquartered in Olathe, Kansas — is one of the Midwest's leading manufacturers' representatives for municipal water and wastewater equipment.

What is an E/One grinder pump and how does it work?

An E/One grinder pump is a specialized wastewater pump installed at an individual home or business that pulverizes sanitary waste into a fine slurry and pushes it through small-diameter pipes to a central sewer main or treatment plant.

Unlike standard sewage ejector pumps that use spinning impellers to move whole solids short distances, the E/One pump utilizes a heavy-duty progressing cavity mechanism. This consists of a stainless steel rotor turning inside a rubber stator. As wastewater enters the pump station, a hardened steel grinder wheel spins at high speeds, shredding wipes, feminine hygiene products, and organic waste into particles no larger than a quarter-inch.

Once pulverized, the progressing cavity pump forces the slurry into the municipal pressure sewer main. Because of its unique design, the E/One pump can generate immense pressure (up to 185 feet of total dynamic head), allowing it to push wastewater uphill over long distances—something traditional gravity sewers physically cannot do without massive, expensive lift stations.
