Haynes Equipment Company, Inc. — founded 1961, headquartered in Olathe, Kansas — is one of the Midwest's leading manufacturers' representatives for municipal water and wastewater equipment.
What is the difference between a grinder pump and a sewage ejector?
A sewage ejector pump moves whole solids and wastewater short distances (like from a basement up to a main gravity sewer line), whereas a grinder pump actively pulverizes solids into a fine slurry and pushes it under high pressure over long distances or steep elevations.
If your home's plumbing is located below the level of the municipal gravity sewer line in the street, you typically only need a sewage ejector. It acts like a powerful sump pump, lifting the wastewater a few vertical feet so it can safely flow by gravity the rest of the way.
However, if your home is part of a low-pressure sewer district, or if the municipal main is located thousands of feet away over rolling hills, you need a grinder pump. Sewage ejectors do not have cutting mechanisms and will instantly clog or burn out if forced to push against the high back-pressure of a municipal force main. The E/One grinder pump's cutting wheel and progressing cavity design are specifically engineered for these high-pressure, long-distance applications.
